Major Donor

Betty Z. Benedict Endowment of $2.6 Million to SCTC

Betty Z. Benedict of New Jersey passed away on January 4, 2018 after a long struggle with systemic sclerosis. Her estate has gifted US$2.6 million to the Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium  - its largest support ever.  The Scleroderma Research Foundation of Calfornia received similar support.

A graduate of Wellesley College, she was an analytical chemist at Merck & Co then pursued a second career in Library Science serving for many years as the Periodicals Librarian for Fairleigh Dickinson University.  A tennis aficionado, she was renown for her keen intellect, independence and kindness towards others. For more information about this remarkable woman, please visit this website.

Ms. Benedict developed systemic sclerosis later in life and received her care under James R. Seibold, MD, a Founder and Past President of the SCTC, at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. She was completely committed to the goals of the SCTC and recognized the key role of the organization in the ongoing quest to develop effective therapies. Her gift is supporting a major expansion of the research programs of the SCTC, and is funding a visiting fellowship programme.
